The vast majority of webhost providers are making an automatic backup of your blog and your files, but free sites like WordPress.com and some cheap solutions offer no form of backup of your files and blog. So one of the first things you need to retain control on your blog will be created backups, it is something that can be purchased ellerer it’s just not possible.
If it is not an option, there are fortunately plugins for your WordPress blog which can handle the tasks for you.
The good thing about these plugins is that they can upload your backup files to Dropbox, so you always have it in a safe place. You can also set it to backup automatically for you so that it can do it at night when no one is on the blog.
The two plugins I like best is “WordPress Backup to Dropbox” and “BackWPup” why I use 2 different is that my blogs are 2 different places. Where there are different rights to what one may and can do, and the whole problem is “php safe mode” and if ti´s “on” or “off“.
And ultimately it depends on stability and security on the servers, therefore chooses 95% of all web hosting providers also to run with safemode on. ”
What does that mean that it is “on. “?
This means that there is a “time limit” of 30 seconds, which means that every task must be completed in under 30 seconds.
But there is also a memory limit of 32 mb. this in turn influences how big file can be created by the backup.
And this is where the various plugins come into play.
WordPress Backup to Dropbox (safemode off)
This is the most user friendly, you install and activate it. So you authorize it up against your dropbox account and you’re up and running. But the problem with this plugin is that your blog is lightning fast becoming bigger and bigger, and if your web host to run with “php safe mode on“. you can´t use due to the limits in time and file size.
BackWPup (safemode on)
Do you use this plugin, then you have somewhat better control on what to backup and what not. For example, I due “only” backup the database and the files / pictures I’ve uploaded, it makes my backup size less than 20 mb. And ultimately it’s also the only things that are a “must have”, the rest you can download and install on your blog. Haven´t you created your WordPress theme, it might be a good idea to backup your wordpress themes also.

Jimmy you are a good man, I have had dropbox for a long time. I didn’t even see that option of linking a wordpress blog to the account until you brought it up. Thanks.

WordPress by consensus is the best publishing platform that we have available, so by that statement there would be a lot people going to be needing to have these tools to protect their blogs.
Both tools are very handy when situations go from bad to worse. Great find Jimmy. Thank you for sharing the info.
