What You Need to Know About DoFollow and NoFollow Links

(And the Difference!)

Without a doubt, vying for traffic on the internet is certainly highly competitive in today’s online marketplace. Most of us understand the basics of link building to increase traffic: More relevant links increase page rankings for our Web sites. In turn this higher visibility drives in even more traffic. But are you familiar with DoFollow and NoFollow links, or their difference?

If not, you may be missing out on a simple and handy tool to get your sites noticed. Or you may be using them incorrectly, which isn’t going to help you either. For those reasons, let’s explore the nuts and bolts of these critical connections, so you can use them to increase your traffic and therefore, get more Page Rank!

What is a DoFollow Link?

You don’t have to be an SEO expert or know HTML code to get a grasp of this link. In general, a link sitting on a web page is just a connection to another Web site. As you probably know, it can be inserted within text, pictures or a reference box and contains an HTML tag and the URL you’ll be going to when clicked.

A DoFollow link is a “regular” link. There is no difference in HTML code. What that tells search engines like Google, is follow the connection to another site. Nothing fancy here. So far, that’s easy right? So let’s move on to the NoFollow link.

What is a NoFollow Link?

This is the one you’re really interested in. A NoFollow link contains the extra code: rel=”nofollow”. It has no effect on a visitor’s experience, as they can still follow the connection. What it does impact is Page Rank on Google. It says “No, you don’t have my permission to follow this link!”

The Big Difference between Dofollow and Nofollow Links

To sum it up nicely — only the search engines or web crawlers pay attention to the NoFollow code. When Google’s algorithms read the NoFollow attribute, it simply ignores the link when calculating a Web site’s Page Rank. So what does all this mean to you? Let’s discuss that next.

How to Use Dofollow and Nofollow Links

Savvy internet marketers use other’s Web sites and blogs to build links, increase page rank and drive more traffic to their own sites — among many other things. They post guest blogs and write comments on related sites leaving their name and a link back to their site. The problem is many blogs these days only allow NoFollow links.

If you write guest posts for other sites, ask the owner to provide you with a DoFollow link. A link back with the DoFollow attribute means your site is important in the eyes of search engines, so it helps to increase your Page Rank factor.

Many believe that a NoFollow link is still useful and worthwhile. Some SEO experts have shown that even these links can help to increase page rankings, so the discussion will continue. And keep in mind a link, whether it’s a NoFollow or DoFollow, will bring visitors to your Web site!

Start Connecting with Your Links!

See, it’s not too difficult to follow the connection between DoFollow and NoFollow links. No you know, so start guest blogging, especially with DoFollow links. It’s a great way to alert traffic to your products or services, including sales and promotions!

“When Google’s algorithms read the NoFollow attribute, it simply ignores the link when calculating a Web site’s Page Rank.” Well. Are you sure? I mean there is a link whatsoever, and a link is a link, and this nofollow link is not considered as powerful as a dofollow link, but it must (should) be considered somehow, or am I totally lost in the dark? :)

      Hello Anna,
No you are not lost in the dark. You have probably read in my article that nowadays there are many who believe that a NoFollow might be useful and worthwhile. Moreover, some SEO experts believe and have provided facts to prove that even these links can help to increase page rankings. It is true that we have no official information from Google, but the basic knowledge we have is that Google’s algorithms ignore them.
It feels to me like this discussion between those two sides will go on and on…

      First, Great article Nick.

Anna, as Nick mentions in the article and in his reply there has been lots of discussion and potential proof that Google does apply value to even NoFollow links. Nicks statement in the article above “No, you don’t have my permission to follow this link” isn’t entirely accurate. Google will follow all links even if NoFollow is there, the NoFollow attribute is more designed just to tell a Google not to pass value to that page.

From what I’ve found is that these are most handy when it’s an uncontrolled link for example in your comments section. A NoFollow basically tells Google to scrutinize the link even further. Matt Cutts and Google have reported that they still may ignore the NoFollow. I’m sure it comes down to if the link is actually relevant among many other factors and magical juju that no one will disclose because of “trade secrets”

In the end, a link, is a link, is a link. Some are more valuable than others, but any link has some value to it.

Good summary on NoFollow and DoFollow. I think NoFollow links count for something. can’t recall where, but I’ve read a about a few SEO experiments where people tried out ranking a website with only NoFollow links, and I think the consensus was that they do count for something. Also, when linkbuilding it is important to make your links look as natural as possible to avoid Google thinking you’re a spammer, so many SEOs purposely include a selection of NoFollow links when linkbuilding.

  3. Thank you Nick! This is very useful information. I am still learning about all of this and have been told that Do Not Follow won’t help in your page rank but it appears that may not be the case. Again, thanks for shedding some light on this.

“Many believe that a NoFollow link is still useful and worthwhile” – Well of course they are. If I make a new website and only focus on building dofollow links to it, google will find out something is fishy soon enough.

So when building links, it’s a good idea to build both dofollow and nodofollow links – at least that’s what I think. :-)

I am not so concerned about do-follow or no-follow stuff, as I believe on the fact that links are for advertisement. However, I agree, do-follow links are helpful to get some good SERP for couple of keywords, but I really don’t like to chase them, because such kind of links will assist my website to get rank well in Google search engine and send some traffic, but I don’t see the point to ignore those no-follow links that might send targeted traffic directly and valuable for sales lead generation. Anyway, your article is very nice. I will recommend your post on forums, because a lot of members often ask the difference between these two terms.

  15. Hi Nick,

What I really do not understand in this follow / nofollow issue is, why Google even distinguish between them.

I mean; if I insert a link at my WordPress-blog, then it will automatically become either one or the other, partly based on any plugin’s installed.

If I want to change the attribute of the standard link, I have to manually add some html code. I manage that task, but not everyone do. And secondly, I will have to remember / consider to do it every time.

Quite inconvenient when one comes blogging. Do Google only want the pro’s to rank? Do everyday-people not contribute with anything important, that deserves to rank?

      Hi Michael,

Very interesting points I have to say; let me try to answer to some of them.

“What I really do not understand in this follow / nofollow issue is, why Google even distinguish between them.”

That is a big question for a lot of us. I think though that when they had unveil this new indexing command for web authors that all search engines recognize, they tried to reduce the link and comment spam that plagues many web sites.

“I mean; if I insert a link at my WordPress-blog, then it will automatically become either one or the other, partly based on any plugin’s installed.
If I want to change the attribute of the standard link, I have to manually add some html code. I manage that task, but not everyone do. And secondly, I will have to remember / consider to do it every time.”

Indeed, you have to know some html code to change the standard link, or as you said by using the right plugin’s.

“Quite inconvenient when one comes blogging. Do Google only want the pro’s to rank? Do everyday-people not contribute with anything important, that deserves to rank?”

As a blogger myself I have to say, that many blogs do deserve to rank high; and they do. The SEO secrets are so many and so well hidden, that surely is not enough for a page or a blog to only have many links, DoFollow or NoFollow.

Thanks a lot Michael for commenting.

      • Hey Nick,

Thank you taking time to answer me back.

Lots of thing about Google doesn’t necessarily seems fair, but it’s their business, so it’s their decision how to run it.

The problem with that is, the success of any website is totally dependent on how Google tread it.

Not that I have any hope, my opinion matters to Google, I still find their algorithm should take into consideration if the site were a private blogger or a professional/business related website – or skip the follow/nofollow thing.

But as you say, there are so many mysteries regarding the algorithm, and I sometimes find site/page ranking, I really can’t understand why does.

Wouldn’t it be great if WP made it an option to check F/NF when inserting a link” That would sure help the blogger a lot….

  19. Tim Barton says:

The reasoning behind the controversy with nofollow is because logically wise its telling search engines not to index the information. While that is true of google, Bing will still follow and crawl to the target and if the target it is indexed bing will use it for the search results. Not only that but some websites will archive topics as they start to age and most archive sites are dofollow so what might not be dofollow now might become dofollow later. And lastly google like a certain amount of nofollow backlinks that don’t relate to your targetting keyword so it doesn’t look like spam.

Great article. I have heard that sites are actually penalized by google for providing no-follow links. I have also heard that the reason Wikipedia has such a high rank is that all the links are no-follow and they have tons of incoming links. I know that is kind of contradictory to my first sentence. However, the penalty might have only come about more recently, at which point Wikipedia already had tons of other factors bringing its page rank up.

  43. To know what is the diversity of do-follow and no-follow links is the prime credit when you are developing hyperlinks for high search results to be successful in website marketing. Google wants free inbound links, which are known as natural links. You can quickly get natural do-follow hyperlinks when you post articles in any high pr article submission sites in the author-bio but where as the no-follow hyperlinks do not provide any benefit at all in impacting Google optimization result.

Using other’s websites by placing links to attract traffic to your website is a great idea. But this link exchange has brought forth the idea of three-way linking.
